The Living Room Moves Outside

Why the line between indoor and outdoor living is disappearing

Outdoor spaces are no longer an afterthought

Trends don't originate in window coverings. They surface first in furniture, interiors, and architecture, shaping how people experience space and comfort long before they reach our category. At Milan Design Week this year, one shift was impossible to miss.

Outdoor spaces are no longer being treated as an afterthought to the home. Across the fairs, from furniture showrooms to full garden installations, the same idea kept surfacing: outdoor rooms designed with the same intention as the rooms inside them. Material, light, comfort, and now control, all considered together rather than added on once the furniture is in place. It's not a passing aesthetic. It's a genuine shift in how people are choosing to live.

"Milan confirmed something we've believed for a while. The outdoor room deserves the same intelligence as the one inside it."

This isn't a passing trend

The data backs up what we saw on the ground in Milan. Homeowner interest in outdoor spaces has grown steadily since 2020, and that momentum hasn't slowed as the years have passed.

Interest in shade specifically has risen sharply, moving from a footnote to one of the first questions people ask when planning an outdoor space. This isn't a pandemic-era spike correcting itself, and it isn't tied to any one season or fair. It's a lasting change in how people define their homes, and in what they expect a terrace or garden to actually do for them, day to day, in every kind of weather.

“In Milan, shade wasn't the last thing on anyone's mind anymore, it was the first thing designers wanted to talk about.”

— Catharina Idema, Creative Director at Coulisse

Your living room's next room is outside

For years, Coulisse has believed a home should feel considered in every room. That thinking doesn't stop at the back door, and it never really has.

If the living room extends onto the terrace, the terrace deserves the same standard of comfort and control as the room it's an extension of. Bringing that idea outside took both sides of Coulisse working toward the same point at the same time: design asking what the outdoor room should feel like, engineering asking what it would take to actually control it. Our new outdoor range is where those two answers meet, a screen collection built for exterior life and a Motionblinds motor range that connects it to every blind indoors, in one ecosystem.

"We're not designing an outdoor product. We're extending one idea across the whole home, and it only works because design and engineering built it together."

— Catharina Idema, Creative Director at Coulisse

Designed for how people actually live outside

Good design starts with how a space is really used, not how it looks in a single photograph. Outdoor rooms today are lived in for the whole day, and increasingly, that's the point. More time outside has become part of how people think about wellbeing, not just weekend weather permitting, but as a daily habit worth designing for.

Morning light through evening shade, indoors and out, means the fabric and technology covering these spaces has to work as hard as anything inside the home. What stood out most is how tactile everything felt. Outdoor fabrics are increasingly chosen the way you'd choose them for a sofa indoors, not only for performance, but for how they feel and look up close, season after season, in every light.

"People aren't just decorating their outdoor spaces anymore. They're designing them to actually spend time in, because that time outside matters to how they feel."
— Catharina Idema, Creative Director at Coulisse

Coulisse Outdoor arrives this year, the same standard of comfort and control, extended outside.
