When Smart Frame was introduced at R+T Stuttgart in February 2024, the response was immediate. An independent jury of trade experts awarded it the R+T Innovation Award 2024. Recognition of a system designed specifically for tilt and turn windows and doors.
A window type widely used, yet rarely supported by fully integrated motorized shading. What stood out was not a single feature, but how multiple elements came together. Mechanical design. Motor technology. Smart integration. Combined into one coherent system. Smart Frame addressed a challenge the industry had largely left unresolved.
“Smart Frame speaks for itself. It is developed simply to provide tilt and turn windows with attractive window coverings that look good and work seamlessly.”
- Jochem Nijland, Product Engineer at Coulisse
R+T Stuttgart is the world’s leading trade fair for roller shutters, doors, and sun protection systems. The Innovation Award is judged by an independent panel evaluating originality, technical merit, and market relevance. It remains one of the most recognized benchmarks within the shading industry.
Smart Frame was selected from a field of international entries at the February 2024 edition, ahead of its commercial launch. The jury recognized a system that approaches a long-standing challenge from a different perspective. Combining mechanical design, motor technology, and integration into one solution, developed entirely in-house at Coulisse.
“Smart Frame brings together multiple technologies in a way that feels both intuitive and refined. It addresses a window type that has traditionally been difficult to motorize.”
- Mascha Wering, Smart Frame Product Manager at Coulisse
The award confirmed the strength of the concept before it reached the market.
On 7 March 2026, the British Blind and Shutter Association presented Coulisse with the Excellence Award for Best New Product. Where the R+T award recognized innovation before launch, the BBSA award reflects performance in real installations. A product in use. Evaluated not only on concept, but on execution, design, and user experience.
“Receiving the BBSA Excellence Award means a great deal to us. It confirms that Smart Frame is not only technically advanced, but also recognized by the market for how it performs in practice. Refined design and clean integration have been core principles from day one.”
- Bas Klein Tuente, Engineering Manager at Coulisse
Every visible component on Smart Frame is precisely color-matched across five finishes. White (RAL 9003), Pure White (RAL 9010), Off White (RAL 9001), Anthracite (RAL 7016), and Black (RAL 9005). The most sought-after architectural colors trending in the market.
The interface is compact. The technology is hidden inside the frame. Behind that simplicity sits a complete system. Motor. Solar panel. Sensors. Control logic. A patented mechanism guiding movement with precision. Two independent juries. One consistent conclusion.
Before Smart Frame reached the market in September 2025, it underwent a structured testing program covering endurance, temperature, and material performance. Because Smart Frame operates within a window, it cannot be evaluated in isolation. Testing took place on real windows. At the Coulisse facility in the Netherlands, and in the homes of colleagues across different departments. Covering a range of frame materials, glazing types, orientations, and sun exposure conditions.
“We tested across two full summers from May to September. The most critical moments are spring and autumn, when the sun is low but still strong and temperatures behind the glass can reach 70 degrees. We needed to know the system could handle that. It can.”
- Jochem Nijland, Product Engineer at Coulisse
Endurance was validated through structured cycle testing. Each cycle representing one full open and close movement, performed without solar input to test the battery independently. An 800 x 220 mm door configuration completed 200 cycli. A 1500 x 1500 mm window completed 250 cycli. A 600 x 600 mm window completed 603 cycli. Tests were repeated multiple times across configurations to verify consistency.
Material performance was validated in parallel. The magnetic tape system, combining a magnetic strip, steel strip, and high-adhesive foam layer, was tested across different frame materials, glazing bead types, and surface conditions. Including windows painted at different times, where surface age directly affects adhesive behavior. Only after consistent results across all scenarios was the system finalized.
Smart Frame is protected by a granted patent, secured across multiple markets through covering Europe, the Netherlands, and Australia. These patents protect the core mechanism behind Smart Frame. The way the motor is integrated into the head rail, and how the motorized rail interacts with the gear racks inside the side profiles.
This is what enables controlled movement within the frame. The patents also protect what this mechanism makes possible. A true top-down bottom-up system within a tilt and turn window. And a dual-motor configuration where synchronization is defined by the geometry of the system itself. Not corrected. Not adjusted. Structurally ensured. This is not a single feature. It is a system approach. One that brings together mechanical design, motor technology, and integration into a solution built for how these windows function.
