For years, Motionblinds has been the smart standard for indoor window coverings. Easy setup. One app. No remotes required. Customers loved it — and then they started asking for more. If a homeowner could control every blind and curtain in their home from a single app, why should their outdoor screens and awnings be any different? Why should going outside mean switching to a different brand, a different system, a different way of working?
The answer, as far as Coulisse was concerned, was that it shouldn't. So in 2024, following R+T Stuttgart, the engineering team set out to bring Motionblinds outdoors.
"We were very successful with Motionblinds for indoor blinds. Then we started getting requests for outdoor screens and outdoor motorization. That would mean one ecosystem — Motionblinds — for both indoor and outdoor. That's a huge advantage for our customers."
Bas Klein Tuente, Engineering Manager at Coulisse
Before a single motor was designed, the team did something deliberate: they listened. They spoke to existing partners who worked across indoor and outdoor, and to new partners with decades of experience in outdoor only. The question they asked was simple — what's missing?
The answer surprised no one who had been paying attention. Motorization in the outdoor market was already common. But smart home technology — Bluetooth setup, Matter integration — had never made it outdoors. The outdoor market was still running almost entirely on radio frequency and remotes. No competitor had brought Bluetooth to screens and awnings. Motionblinds would be the first.
"No one in the outdoor market has screens and awnings that use Bluetooth. We would be the only ones. When our partners started testing, they were very enthusiastic about the easiness of the setup."
Bas Klein Tuente, Engineering Manager at Coulisse
The range that emerged is intentionally compact: six motors in total. Two for screens (35mm and 45mm), one for awnings (45mm) — each in battery/solar and wired versions, plus an LED-integrated option for awnings — paired with a solar panel, vibration sensor for automatic wind retraction, and wireless LED battery. Screen motors include built-in obstacle detection, stopping automatically if something blocks the screen's path. To some, six motors might seem modest. It isn't. It's a deliberate engineering position.
By maximizing torque and minimizing diameter — using the highest-performing motor possible in each application — the team eliminated the need for the overlapping ranges that leading competitors carry. Where other brands offer a large amount of motor types across multiple ranges and price points, Motionblinds Outdoor covers it all with six. Each motor uses both Bluetooth and 433MHz radio frequency: Bluetooth for fast, intuitive setup without a remote, and 433MHz to pass reliably through walls for day-to-day operation from inside the home. Add the Motionblinds Bridge, and the ecosystem expands to Matter — the global smart home standard that connects to Apple Home, Google Home, Amazon Alexa, and SmartThings. Every way to connect, covered.
"We always use the flagship of each range — maximum torque in the smallest possible diameter and length. Because of that, we can eliminate a lot of motors from the portfolio. Leading competitors might have a lot of motor types. We have six motors to cover it all."
Bas Klein Tuente, Engineering Manager at Coulisse
The motors fit any existing hardware in the market. Drive shaft adapters are compatible with leading industry systems — fabricators don't need to change crowns, adapters, or production lines. But hardware compatibility is the baseline, not the differentiator.
The Motionblinds app controls everything: screens, awnings, and LED lighting in awnings — all in one environment. For installers, that means scanning a QR code, setting limits in the app, and leaving. The homeowner doesn't need to be present. For end users, it means one interface for the entire home, inside and out — screens, awnings, and every indoor blind, all from the same app they already use. And for fabricators, it means sales teams and installation teams learn one system — because it works the same everywhere.
"At the end of the day — the motor goes up and down. The secret is how you control it. And we have engineered the most simple way to control both indoor and outdoor window coverings. All in one Motionblinds app."
Bas Klein Tuente, Engineering Manager at Coulisse
The reliability of the range doesn't come from specifications alone. It comes from two years of development and over a year of field testing with five industry partners — outdoor specialists with up to 20 years of experience — who tested the motors in real installations before a single product went to market. The result is a 5-year warranty across the full outdoor motor range, and a system that fabricators, installers, and end users can trust from day one.
The living room has always been the most considered space in a home — every material, every layer of comfort chosen with care. That same intelligence is now moving outside, to terraces, facades, and garden spaces increasingly treated as extensions of the interior. Motionblinds Outdoor is built for that world. Smart enough for the home. Durable enough for the elements. Simple enough that setup takes minutes, not hours — and controlled, like everything in the Motionblinds ecosystem, from the palm of your hand.
"We have the thought, the design, the testing, the confidence, the guarantee, the reliability — because we developed this with partners who have been in this industry for a long time."
