Indoor air quality is moving from a design preference to a legal requirement. The EU's recast Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (2024/1275) has written Indoor Environmental Quality into EU law for the first time, requiring member states to set standards for a healthy indoor climate.
Green building certifications have been ahead of this curve for years. BREEAM, WELL, and LEED all include formal requirements tied to measurable air quality, and all three are raising their standards further with each new version.
